Quick answer: RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) is a way to make an AI app answer from your own documents. Before the language model writes an answer, the app searches your documents for the most relevant passages and gives them to the model as context. The result is answers that are grounded in your data instead of guesses.
Why RAG is useful
A large language model only knows what it learned during training. It does not know your company policies, your product manual or last week’s report. RAG closes that gap without retraining the model: you keep the documents in a searchable store and pull in the right pieces at question time. It also makes it easier to show sources for an answer.
How a RAG app works, step by step
- Collect and split documents into small chunks, such as paragraphs.
- Create embeddings: each chunk is turned into a list of numbers that captures its meaning.
- Store them in a vector database, which can quickly find chunks with similar meaning.
- Retrieve: when a user asks a question, the question is embedded too, and the closest chunks are fetched.
- Generate: the question and the retrieved chunks go to the language model, which writes the answer.
The building blocks
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Embedding model | Turns text into vectors that represent meaning |
| Vector database | Stores vectors and finds the most similar ones |
| Retriever | Chooses which chunks to send to the model |
| Language model (LLM) | Writes the final answer from the question and the context |
| Prompt | Tells the model how to use the context, for example to answer only from it |
Common mistakes beginners make
- Chunks that are too large or too small, so the right passage is never retrieved.
- No instruction to the model to stay within the provided context.
- Not testing with real questions and checking whether answers are correct.
Learn to build RAG apps
Our AI Application Developer course covers prompt engineering, embeddings, vector databases and RAG, and one of its projects is a company document chatbot built with RAG. It runs for 5 months with a 2-month internship. Compare it with web development in our guide Full Stack vs AI Application Developer.
Frequently asked questions
Is RAG the same as fine-tuning?
No. Fine-tuning changes the model itself by training it further. RAG keeps the model as it is and gives it relevant documents at question time.
Do I need to know Python to build RAG apps?
Python is the most common language for this work, and our AI Application Developer course starts with Python basics.
What is a vector database?
A database that stores embeddings and can quickly find the items most similar in meaning to a query.
