Quick answer: An AI agent is an application in which a language model decides which actions to take to finish a task, such as searching, calling an API or querying a database, and then uses the results to decide the next step. A chatbot mostly answers; an agent also acts.
Chatbot vs AI agent
| Chatbot | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Answers questions | Completes tasks |
| Uses tools | Rarely | Yes, through tool calling |
| Steps | Usually one reply | Several steps, deciding what to do next |
| Example | Answering an FAQ | Looking up an order, checking a policy and drafting a reply |
Tool calling
Tool calling lets a model ask your code to run a function, for example get_order_status(order_id). Your app runs the function and sends the result back, and the model continues with real data. This is the basic building block of every agent.
Frameworks: LangGraph and CrewAI
LangGraph lets you design an agent as a graph of steps with clear control over the flow, loops and state. CrewAI focuses on several agents with different roles working together on a task. Both help you organise multi-step and multi-agent work.
MCP (Model Context Protocol)
MCP is an open protocol for connecting AI applications to tools and data sources in a standard way, so the same tool can be offered to different AI apps without writing a new connector each time.
What makes a good agent
- A small set of clear tools with good descriptions
- Limits on what the agent is allowed to do
- Testing on real tasks and logging every step
- A human check for important actions
Learn to build AI agents
Our AI Application Developer course covers tool calling, LangGraph, CrewAI, MCP and multi-agent systems, with a customer-support agent project. Start with our guide What is RAG? if you are new to AI apps.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI agent the same as automation?
Traditional automation follows fixed rules. An AI agent uses a language model to decide steps, so it can handle less predictable tasks, which also means it needs careful limits and testing.
Which language is used to build agents?
Python is the most common choice, and it is the main language in our AI Application Developer course.
What is multi-agent?
A setup in which several agents with different roles work together, for example one researching and one writing.
